Story Time: Working Temporary Jobs

The summer after graduating college, I ended up hopping between jobs and it honestly was not the worst thing in the world... but it was pretty rough. So here's my story time:

As soon as I got back from the mainland I interviewed that Friday, and started the following Monday with a staffing company. It was a temp to hire administrative assistant position with a three month probation period. It paid better than my previous jobs and was about 8 minutes from my house. Sounds great right!

Well everything was going smoothly until two weeks later. The girl who was training me decided that she wanted to stay in that position, so I get booted out of the office. Because this was an unforeseen change of heart, they offered me her old position. Since I did not want to be unemployed the following Monday, I agreed to try it out. Question of the day! What are your job horror stories?

However, with this position it has a two year commitment contract. At the time I could not make it because I had just graduated college and I did not know where my life was going to go in two years. The compromise was that they were going to keep me in that position until they found a job for me (since they are a staffing company).

BUT! Two weeks after that, I get pulled aside and they said that they found someone for front desk position and my last day was the following Friday. They did not have another position lined up for me, but offered to keep looking. So I told them it was alright and I'd figure it out on my own.

WILD RIGHT!

So because of this back and forth and bad experience, I decided to take a 10 day trip to Washington.

Once coming back, I started interviewing immediately. I interviewed with another staffing agency and they liked me so much that they set up an interview with one of their clients for later that afternoon. The client interview also went amazingly and I started working the very next day!

The issue with temporary jobs is that they have an end date, so the job search never truly ends. If you are older and are not covered by a parent or a spouse getting that medical/dental coverage can vary from agency to agency.

My current temporary assignment ends on August 23rd, and through the constant job searching I landed another position that starts the very next day. Staffing agencies are really great about trying to keep you employed as much as possible. Depending on their client list and needs you may never see a break between jobs.

I do recommend college students who are looking for a summer job to check out staffing agencies. They pay well (because they have to make up for not offering benefits) and could be in an industry you are looking to get your foot in the door with.
